The Statue of Unity is a statue that has been erected by the Government of India to pay homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was a great politician. It is the tallest statue in the world and stands over a height of around 182 meters. It is as two times tall as the Statue of Liberty in the United States. The statue is located by the Narmada River near the Sardar Sarovar Dam. The city of Vadodara is located in the south eastern part of the statue.
There is an artificial lake that surrounds the Statue of Unity along with vegetation. The statue is built on an island called the Sadhu Bet. The total area consists of around two hectares. The statue was built by Larsen & Toubro, with a budget of around US$420 million. The construction started in 2014 and ended four years later in 2018. The statue was dedicated to the country and the world by Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister on 31st October. It was the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.
The Statue of Unity was built on a public private partnership model and the funds were raised by the Government of Gujarat. The state government allotted around $84 million for the project and around $28 million was allotted by the union ministry. There is also a museum that has been built near the statue. It consists of items used by Patel and also depicts the life of Patel through an audio visual medium. Ram Sutar, the renowned sculptor designed the look of the statue.
The Statue of Unity is expected to boost tourist in the area and around 15000 tourists are expected daily here. The government expects to develop the area from the money that will be collected from the sale of the tickets.
